In this episode, Dominican pastor and theologian Dr. Fausto Liriano joins Dru Johnson to confront a striking absence in Latin American Christianity: the lack of a theological framework to address corruption. Liriano reflects on growing up in a conservative Pentecostal context where clothing and gender separation were strictly policed—while bribery, tax evasion, and other forms of corruption were silently tolerated. “You can dress right and still cross moral red lines,” he says, highlighting the gap between personal piety and public integrity.

Together, they explore how corruption pervades Latin American society, from anonymous judges to threatened police officers, creating a cycle of fear and moral compromise. Dru compares this with missionary experiences in Kazakhstan, where some Christians developed informal theologies of bribery out of necessity—something sorely lacking in much of the Latin American context.

Liriano points to liberation theology’s holistic view of the human person—body, mind, spirit, and community—as a potential starting point for this missing theology. He calls for a discipleship that addresses the full reality of people’s lives, including systemic and everyday injustices.
