Through an ecumenical lens, this talk engages with Protestant and Catholic scholarship, offering a compelling defence of the Catholic view on priesthood. Professor Levering critiques contemporary Protestant biblical theologies that minimise the cultic nature of the royal priesthood, arguing instead that true priesthood must include sacrificial worship. He engages with scholars like G.K. Beale, Grant Petrie, Andrew Malone, David Schrock and Michael Morales, assessing their perspectives on priesthood and the Eucharist. The talk challenges modern misconceptions about the Eucharist, showing that from the early Church onward, the Eucharistic sacrifice and the ordained priesthood were integral to Christian worship. Professor Levering demonstrates how Catholic theology maintains the cultic energy of the Old Testament while affirming Christ as the ultimate high priest.
