John Walton (Professor Emeritus of Old Testament, Wheaton College and Graduate School)
This session will tackle the sensitive topic of Adam and Eve, analyzing what claims the Bible makes. It will introduce various models centered on the question of whether Genesis is interested in Adam and Eve as real people in a real past or not. If it is interested in them as individuals, are they recent ancestors or ancient ancestors? If not, what is the point of Gen. 1-3? Discussion will include what the Bible means by the image of God and will especially focus on the archetypal role of Adam and Eve, as well as the question of trying to integrate them into a scientific view. A final topic will explore whether the biblical view is compatible with mainstream science.
