"If we want to embrace unconditional love for the world, we will have to contend with forces that undermine that love. One such feature, largely unrecognized but pervasive, is striving for superiority. It permeates our lives, in all domains, from cradle to grave. I explore how St. Paul and, following him, Max Scheler, use The Hymn to Christ in Philippians to shore up unconditional love for all human beings and to expose striving for superiority for what it is: not a benign driver of progress, but a world-destructive vice. Both thinkers help us connect the challenge of loving the world that is often unlovable to the challenge of coming to see ourselves not merely as creatures of need but, above all, as unconditionally loved." Miroslav Volf Thank you for joining us for the fifth and final 2025 Gifford Lecture at the University of Aberdeen, delivered by Professor Miroslav Volf.
