A long-standing approach has been to reconcile differences between Gospel accounts, though some traditions emphasize harmonizing every detail while others accept minor discrepancies and focus on the overall message as faithful to what happened.

An example is the story of Jesus healing a centurion’s servant: one version presents a more detailed sequence involving intermediaries, while another simplifies it by having the centurion speak directly. This kind of simplification reflects a common ancient writing practice, where authors condensed events or attributed actions to a central figure for clarity and brevity without intending to distort the core meaning.

Similar techniques appear in other ancient biographies, where the same author may present slightly different versions of the same event, sometimes transferring words or actions from intermediaries to main figures. This shows that variation does not necessarily indicate error, but rather a stylistic or compositional choice.
