The justly famous Five Theological Orations of Gregory of Nazianzus is a series of doctrinal sermons preached by the Nazianzan in Constantinople in the year 380. They are the anchor and base of the orthodox cause in a critical conflict with the Eunomians who were extreme Arians overconfident in their knowledge of God, and with the Macedonians of Constantinople who questioned the deity of the Holy Spirit. Among the most important trinitarian theologians of our time, Dr. Robert Letham is eminently qualified to lead this series of lessons and discussion of a close reading of the Orations. In today’s clip, Dr. Letham considers the incomprehensibility of the Trinity and how our doctrines of Eternal Generation and Eternal Procession form the heart of the gospel.
The Greystone Reading Room is more than a book club, but less than a class. Exploring rich, challenging, and edifying texts from across the disciplines and the centuries, the Greystone Reading Room creates and fosters true theological fellowship by conversational and deliberative engagement with texts and other readers. Our most recent Reading Room was hosted by Dr. Robert Letham, Greystone Fellow in Theology and History. Dr. Letham served as our guide as we read and reflected on the Five Theological Orations of Gregory of Nazianzus. Today’s lecture clip is taken from that Greystone Reading Room.
