Envy. Greed. Lust. Pride. Four of the seven. The seven deadly sins. The seven deadly sins have been well represented in our culture's imagination. You can pick out at least one of them in just about every show or movie or YouTube video that you watch. Sheltering in places seems to have stripped away a lot of the things we've used to distract ourselves from the soul work that we each need to do. As we look at ourselves anew in this unique time, we don't always like what we see. Who am I becoming? What kind of person are my choices, big and small, adding up to? It's about character formation and being formed in virtue. But fleeing vice is the first step toward building virtue. To help us flee vice and build virtue in our character, is today's guest, Dr. Rebecca DeYoung. Rebecca is professor of philosophy and ethics at Calvin University (formerly Calvin College). She is also the author of the book, Glittering Vices: A New Look at the Seven Deadly Sins and their Remedies. Sycamore Creek Church has just finished an eight week series based on her book, and she joined us for a spiritual retreat on the topic recently. I'm grateful she has agreed to join us again today for a different audience to help us navigate Shelter in Place in a way that flees vice and builds virtue.
