Is systematic theology distorting how we read the Bible? In this episode, Dr. R.T. Mullins and Dr. Dru Johnson take a hard look at Wayne Grudem’s wildly popular systematic theology and the dangers of proof texting—cherry-picking verses to support pre-existing theological frameworks.
Mullins critiques how many theologians apply logic and philosophy inconsistently, switching their thinking off when they "find" a verse that fits their doctrine. He and Johnson discuss an example where a systematic theologian used Psalm 139 to "prove" God’s omnipresence—without considering whether the text was making a philosophical claim or simply describing God's relational presence.
The conversation raises a critical question: Are theologians reading the Bible on its own terms, or forcing it into rigid doctrinal categories? If biblical authors had their own philosophical framework, shouldn't we try to understand it before imposing our own?
