δέ (de), GK 1254 (S 1161), 2791x.
δέ means “but; and”
“δέ a second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” (Matt 22:39)
“You are the salt of the earth, δέ if salt has lost its taste, how will it be made salty again?” (Matt 5:13)
δέ has only a slight lexical value. It can simply connect ideas, translated either as “and” (Mt. 1:2) or “now” (Mt. 2:3), or not translated at all since punctuation can perform the same function in English (Mt. 1:2). In this case, δέ is merely marking continuation. When the ideas are in contrast, δέ can be translated as “but” (Mt. 6:1).
