Americans sing of their county "as the "land of their fathers," "land of their children". But two and a half world wars and a catastrophic depression in a single depression have rocked the idea of building a better world for the kids, - in short, the idea of progress - to its foundations. Is it still reasonable to believe in progress, Huston Smith asks Professor Reinhold Niebuhr, distinguished America author and theologian? If not, does this conclusion cut the nerve of social effort? In the mid-1950s and early 1960 Huston Smith produced, with National Educational Television (NET precursor to PBS) three television series that would have an enormous impact on American culture. The Religions of Man introduced Americans to the religious cultures of the world. For many Americans it was their first exposure to Vedanta, Islam, and Buddhism. The series, Science and Human Responsibility and The Search for America brought leading scientists, intellectuals, philosophers, and authors to discuss the issues of the time, which are still relevant today. The original films of these early TV series have been discovered in archives and were almost lost to time. Thanks to generous donations, they are now preserved and available for free viewing at www.HustonSmith.org
