Craig G. Bartholomew : ‘The Doctrine of Creation and the Symbolism of Evil’

Evangelicals have understandably focussed on the fall as an historical event. However, in the process little attention has been paid to the radicality of the OT's symbolism of evil against the backdrop of its doctrine of creation. This paper will use Paul Ricoeur's thought in Freedom and Necessity, Fallible Man, The Symbolism of Evil and Oneself as Another as a dialogue partner in examining how the doctrine of creation yields a unique and profound view of evil. In this way the thickness of the doctrine of creation will be foregrounded and some ways explored for its recovery.
