These methods were taught in rhetorical training manuals, such as those by Theon, and included practices like paraphrasing, expanding, shortening, or rewording material, and even turning teachings into dialogue to make them clearer or more engaging.

Writers in antiquity had a broader understanding of paraphrase than today, allowing them to adapt material while preserving its core meaning. This explains why the same teachings or events might appear in slightly different forms.
