In this lecture, given at the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management, William Cavanaugh questions that assumption and shows that underlying it is a distorted view of the way people really are. He examines some empirical research and shows that Augustine's theological anthropology anticipated this research by many centuries. He then argues that aspects of Augustine's theology are needed to adequately account for human desire and human freedom.
