Why does God want us to persevere in prayer?
Interestingly, here in Luke, you see the friend doesn’t immediately answer and give the bread. For we’re to understand our heavenly Father and friend wants us to persevere in our prayers.
Of course God could give to us and bless us without our asking, and he regularly does that in his grace. But the God of fellowship wants fellowship with us. And so he wants us to argue his character and his promises with him so that he becomes an ever more conscious reality for us. Where normally the world just absorbs all our attention, he wants us to focus on him—to know who he is, and so trust him, depend on him.
And so we grow, particularly in the hard times, as we persist, developing in our appreciation that he is our friend; that he is the source of all blessing; that we and the world need him.
