September 7: The Barmen Declaration: What Was the Barmen Declaration and Why Is It Important? In the 1930s many of the churches in Germany bowed down to Hitler, while other churches refused to raise their hands and salute the Fuhrer. This latter group was led by Karl Barth and Dietrich Bonhoeffer, among others, and was called the Confessing Church---confessing because it was based on a confession of faith in God, not allegiance to a human ruler. In 1934 the Confessing Church drafted the Barmen Declaration.
