Luke's gospel, more than the others, shows us Jesus at prayer. Before undertaking a new aspect of his ministry, Jesus separates himself from his followers to pray. They seem to notice this about Jesus and early in our gospel reading for today they say, "Teach us to pray just like John [the Baptist] taught his disciples to pray." There is something attractive and compelling about Jesus' life of prayer and his disciples want to learn this. At his disciples' request, Jesus teaches them what we have come to know as the Lord's prayer. This prayer is so deeply woven into the fabric of almost all of our services that we tend to forget how strange it is and what a gift it is to be invited into a life of prayer with God. About Our Preacher: Stephen Fowl, PhD is a member of the Cathedral Community. When he is not preaching, Steve sings in the choir and currently serves on the Cathedral Chapter as Senior Warden. He is Professor of Theology and dean of the college of arts and sciences at Loyola University. In addition to preaching and teaching at various churches around the country, Steve also serves on the Theology Committee of the House of Bishops.
