In this episode, Dru Johnson sits down with Hakeem Bradley to explore his journey from the 5 Percent Nation to Christianity. The 5 Percent Nation, an offshoot of the Nation of Islam, emerged during the civil rights era and teaches that 85% of people are ignorant, 10% are elites who control knowledge, and the remaining 5%—Black men, seen as gods—hold the truth. Hakeem shares how he grew up in this belief system, learning that Christianity was a "white man's religion" and that Islam was the true path for Black people.
However, his perspective changed when he moved from Philadelphia to Portland, Oregon—a starkly different cultural and racial environment. There, he met a mentor whose everyday life and genuine faith in Jesus challenged his preconceptions. Through this relationship, Hakeem came to see Christianity not as an oppressive tool but as a transformative truth.
Dru and Hakeem also discuss the 5 Percenters' influence on hip-hop, the movement’s similarities to Gnosticism, and how people in the group interpret sacred texts. This episode provides a rare glimpse into a little-known religious movement and one man's radical transformation through faith in Christ.
