An excerpt from an online seminar discussion I hosted on theology, race, and ministry. In this excerpt, guest theologian Dr. Vincent Bacote, professor of theology at Wheaton College, reflects on what led Dr. James Cone to offer a creative reinterpretation of the gospel, especially as seen in his book "A Black Theology of Liberation." Dr. Bacote challenges evangelical Christians to wrestle with the issues that Dr. Cone raises even if they do not agree with his answers. He states: "You don't have to have Cone's convictions, but you can still say he asksimportant questions." For Dr. Cone's personal account of his theological journey, see "My Soul Looks Back" and "Said I Wasn't Gonna Tell Nobody: The Making of a Black Theologian."
