The launch of a new book – Reading the Bible in Islamic Context: Qur’anic Conversations, edited by Daniel J. Crowther, Shirin Shafaie, Ida Glaser, and Shabbir Akhtar, Routledge, 2018 – took place on 15th March 2018 at Wycliffe Hall.
Ida Glaser introduced the vision and series to the audience and Shirin Shafaie spoke about Biblical and Qur'anic Joseph stories. Daniel Crowther and Shabbir Akhtar conducted a mutual interview between a Christian and a Muslim, entitled ‘Challenges and insights of reading the Scripture of another’s faith’.
The launch was introduced by Revd Dr Michael Lloyd, Principal of Wycliffe Hall, and hosted by Dr Martin Whittingham, Director of CMCS.
This edited volume is the culmination of efforts by the CMCS Research Group “Reading the Bible in the Context of Islam” and has contributions from 22 Muslim and Christian authors in 17 chapters. It was published by Routledge last year (2017) and also inaugurates the Routledge Reading the Bible in Islamic Context Series.
Authors of this volume have written their contributions in the light of one common question: How does the analysis presented in my chapter add to or change the way in which I or others will read the Bible in the future?
Chapters cover a diverse range of topics, including “Abraham in Narrative Worldviews”, “Reading between the Joseph Stories”, “the ‘Sin’ of David”, “the Culture Shock of the Bible”, “Biblical Ruth as a Qur’anic Queen of Sheba”, “a Theology of Divine Signs”, “The Place of Purity in Faith”, “The Gospel of John as a Structure for Muslim–Christian Understanding” and much more.
The comparative analyses presented in this volume adopt an inter-contextual approach that goes beyond the merely intertextual analysis of similarities and differences between shared qur’anic and biblical narratives. The aim is to develop new methodologies for reading the Bible in the context of Islam that can impact the way in which Muslim readers interpret the Bible and help Christian readers to use Islamic texts for stimulating their biblical interpretation.
The book is aimed at scholars and students of both Biblical and Qur’anic Studies, as well as any Muslim seeking to deepen their understanding of the Bible, and any Christian looking to transform the way in which they read the Bible.
