Lecture Title - Principles for Successful Multiracial Churches

Why do we still worship in our own racial enclaves? How can we construct our churches in ways that will help us to draw people of different races? Is it possible to overcome much of the racial segregation that still troubles the greater Chicago area? George Yancey draws on his years of research of multiracial churches to offer some answers to these questions. He outlines the principles that these churches used in order to become racially diverse. He would love to help provide insight into how you can reach people of different races for your ministry as well.

George Yancey (PhD University of Texas at Austin) is Professor of Sociology at Baylor University. His publications include What Motivates Cultural Progressives: Understanding Opposition to the Political and Christian Right (Baylor University Press, 2012), So Many Christians, So Few Lions: Is There Christianophobia in the United States? (Rowman and Littlefield, 2014), and Compromising Scholarship: Religious and Political Bias in American Higher Education (Baylor University Press, 2017).

The Henry Center for Theological Understanding provides theological resources that help bridge the gap between the academy and the church. It houses a cluster of initiatives, each of which is aimed at applying practical Christian wisdom to important kingdom issues—for the good of the church, for the soul of the theological academy, for the sake of the world, and ultimately for the glory of God. The HCTU seeks to ground each of these initiatives in Scripture, and it pursues these goals collaboratively, in order to train a new generation of wise interpreters of the Word—lay persons and scholars alike—for the sake of tomorrow’s church, academy, and world.
