What might today’s antifa – and their detractors – learn from an early antifascist student group?

On February 22, 1943, Hans and Sophie Scholl and their friend Christoph Probst were found guilty of treason against the Third Reich, and guillotined.

As core members of the student group The White Rose, these young people were decidedly antifascist. But their convictions were, in many ways, quite distinct from most who claim the antifa label today. Devout Christians and passionate German patriots, they wrote and distributed a series of leaflets which sought to arouse Germans’ cultural memory and conscience, quoting Schiller, Goethe, Aristotle, and Novalis.

On March 4 at 7:30 pm, join Maximilian Probst, Christoph’s grandson; the philosopher Dr. Jennifer Frey of the University of South Carolina; activist Aimee Murphy of Rehumanize International; and history teacher Lisabeth Button for a conversation to launch Freiheit!, Plough’s new graphic novel about the lives and deaths of the White Rose members. Plough Senior Editor Susannah Black will moderate.
