Although Luther may have been the one who lit the match, the kindling of Reformation had already been piled high by the missteps of the late medieval Papacy and the efforts of earlier church reformers. This lecture looks at the Great Western Schism of 1378-1417, and how it weakened the Pope's authority, inviting men like John Wycliffe and John Huss to publicly question some of the church's teachings and call for a reform according to the Bible. We finish by looking at the important contribution of the humanist movement, with its call to "return to the sources"--especially the Bible in its original languages.
