A candid critique - with two spectacular gaffes made by me - of Dr. Darrell Bock's (mis)treatment of external evidence in his chapter of "Perspectives on the Ending of Mark - 4 Views" (Broadman & Holman Publishers) 2008
Internal evidence is sometimes decisive - but you use internal evidence to connect the external dots when you are unaware of many of them!
20 - Telford's misinformation - "all Greek manuscripts known to Eusebius and Jerome" lack Mk 16:9-20
25 - William Barclay - Mk 16:9-20 is "not in any of the great early manuscripts"
27 - GAFFE on my part: I meant "300s" instead of "200s"
45 - Bock attempts to minimize the earlier external evidence in favor of Mk 16:9-20
45 - Connect the dots - but first make sure you have all the dots to connect!
00 - Brittle fundamentalism versus brittle skepticism
25 - a nomenclature glitch: "shorter ending" ("Intermediate Ending") and "short ending" (at 16:8)
00 - GAFFE on my part: I intended to say that the Armenian version is Caesarean (NOT Byzantine!)
30 - what about Aphrahat?
30 - Bobbiensis - a tampered Latin text - with an interpolation between 16:3 and 16:4, and with part of verse 8 missing
20 - Bock's false claim about Byzantine lectionaries
40 - "starts to appear in the eighth century" - Bock is ridiculously wrong
00 - regarding the commentary-manuscript GA 304 see https://www.thetextofthegospels.com/2016/05/minuscule-304-theophylact-and-ending-of.html and https://evangelicaltextualcriticism.blogspot.com/2023/01/houghton-ga-239-304-do-not-attest-short.html
00 - Bock's selective presentation of which pieces of evidence to connect
15 - Details of Eusebius' "Ad Marinum"
00 - Jerome - Epistle 120 - "Ad Hedibiam" - echoes/summarizes Eusebius' statement to Marinus and advocated retaining Mk 16:9 with a pause after "Rising"
00 - Bock: "ten fathers from the second to fifth centuries" - the actual number of patristic sources in the 100-s-400s is closer to forty. You can't CONNECT the dots if you don't HAVE the dots.
