This passage is often cited by historians as the most authentic reference to Jesus outside the Bible precisely because it is so casual. Josephus wasn't trying to spread the Gospel; he was simply reporting on why a High Priest got fired. By using "Jesus, who was called Christ" merely as a label to distinguish which James was on trial, Josephus inadvertently confirms that Jesus was a known public figure in 62 AD, even among the Roman and Jewish elite who opposed Him.
