Britain seems to be in an almost perpetual housing crisis. There are too few houses, particularly in the most desirable areas, and much of the publicly owned housing stock is falling into disrepair. The COVID-19 pandemic has served to shine a light on the disparities in housing provision like never before. The divide between those stuck in small flats or overcrowded housing and those in large homes with their own work and outside space has become increasingly stark over the last 10 months. With the government backing a new mortgage guarantee scheme, extending the reduction in stamp duty, and developing proposals for a radical overhaul of the public planning system to speed up developments, now is the time to think about what the future of housing might look like in our communities.

In this session we will investigate what role communities could play in developing resilient, affordable housing that supports both people and place to thrive. Is there an opportunity to capture the community spirit seen throughout the pandemic in order to strengthen bonds between residents and create a more equitable housing system that works for both home buyers and renters alike?

This event was in partnership with Local Trust and FINN Partners.
