The Rev Professor Diarmaid MacCulloch, professor of the history of the church at the University of Oxford, gives a wide ranging interview to Roger Bolton, on the Lambeth Conference 2022, when Anglican bishops from all parts of the world assemble in Canterbury. Once more, same sex marriage has stolen the headlines, revealing deep divisions of belief which have already led to splits. He says the Anglican Communion has enormous value, but it may be time to pull the plug on the Lambeth conference, as it gives an illusion of a worldwide church with a leader in Canterbury, an entirely wrong way of looking at Anglicanism. The Communion is a fragile structure: "You don't mess with it. You don't use it as a football". The interview write up is on the Religion Media Centre website. Further information: [email protected]
