How do we deal with a Good God, Moral Choice and the Presence of Evil? These questions were addressed in the panel discussion on January 20, 2023 at the Lanier Theological Library.
Ingrid Faro discusses God's presence and the role of mankind in the holocaust. She says that mankind was duplicate in the evil that allowed the holocaust to happen. Even before Germany's take over of much of Europe people began to shun the Jewish community, separating them into housing and commercial areas. Only a small percentage if people made a stand against what they knew was happening. Even religiously leaders chose not to intervene.
We see some of the same things happening today. When violence and attacks occur in public, often people stand on the sidelines recording videos of the event rather than stepping in to help.
Faro says that in scripture we see God and the prophets reacting very strongly to the injustices of the world. The attitude is that the oppression of the poor and weak is a catastrophe in the eyes of God. And God expects his people to stand strong against this kind of evil because we need to see each and every person as being made in the image of God and being cherished by God.
