The parable traditionally referred to as that of the “Good Samaritan” has been instructive for Christians because of the way it unsettles us and challenges our prejudices and priorities. For Jesus’ original audience, the complexities of religious differences and political strife would have added to the weight of the message he delivered. Imagine having in your midst a group of people you believed to be unfaithful to God’s covenant, and who were, because of their ethnic origin, excluded from God’s people. These were some of the issues that Jesus’ audience wrestled with as they heard his response to the lawyer who asked, “who is my neighbor?”
