WILDLIFE SCENE (from Ut Unum Sint, 1956) by John Bradburne In lakeland haunt near flag and reed The water-hens and mallards feed, Whilst round the mere o'er garden lawns Dance dragonflies and leprechauns. The tumbler-pigeons tumbling there Fly head-over-heels in a balmy air, Roucouling the while in a whirl of mirth Then lighting again to the springy turf. 'Tis there the fragrant zephyrs blow And set lake-waters lapping low: Tis there, to whispering rushes nigh, That wagtails dart most merrily. Upon an isle of stirring trees A woody isle in Summer breeze - The whirring churring 'jars present A daylight nocturne of content.
