Revd Dr Helen Paynter is the Director of the Centre for the Study of Bible and Violence and Tutor in Biblical Studies at the Bristol Baptist College.
Helen has a Master's in Missional Church Leadership, another Master's in Biblical Studies, and a Ph.D. in Old Testament. Her main research interests are in the narrative portions of the Hebrew Bible. Her second Master's dissertation was on ‘total annihilation’ in Deuteronomy and Joshua, her Ph.D. thesis was on aspects of humour in the book of Kings, and her current research interest is in the violence of the Old Testament. She is the founding director of the College’s Centre for the Study of Bible and Violence, which exists to facilitate cutting-edge research in the areas of the hermeneutics of biblical violence and the abuse of the Bible in a violent world and to serve the churches by providing resources in these areas.
Helen is passionate about helping people to get to grips with the Bible because she has seen its power to transform lives. She loves to study it, preach it, teach it, encourage others to study and understand it and help others to learn to read it in its original languages.
She is the author of several books: The Bible Doesn’t Tell Me So: Why You Don’t Have to Submit to Domestic Abuse and Coercive Control (BRF, 2020), Telling Terror in Judges 19: Rape and Reparation for the Levite’s Wife (Routledge, 2020), God of violence yesterday, God of love today? Wrestling honestly with the Old Testament (BRF, 2019), Reduced Laughter: Seriocomic Features and their Functions in the Book of Kings (Brill, 2016). Her forthcoming book is A Biblical Theology of Human Violence (Zondervan, 2023).
This lecture was given at the Summer School of Theology 2023 "Wounds of Today's World: Doing and Living Theology in the Context of Trauma"
