Loving Your Husband: The Virtuous Wife
Proverbs 31:23–31
The final chapter of Proverbs closes the book of wisdom with one of Scripture’s most beautiful portraits: the virtuous woman.
Her strength, her grace, her wisdom, and her fear of the Lord shine through every verse. And among her many virtues, one theme stands out—her love for her husband.
This passage shows a woman whose marriage is a reflection of Christ and the church: built on respect, kindness, faithfulness, and godly partnership.
The Power of Genuine Compliments
Men may appear tough, but their hearts are far more tender than they let on. Every man, no matter how confident, needs the affirmation of his wife.
Ephesians 5 commands wives to respect their husbands. One of the most powerful ways to express that respect is through genuine, specific compliments.
A man’s work, his effort, his perseverance—all these things matter deeply to him. They are often tied to his sense of calling and responsibility.
When a wife recognizes that and says, “Thank you for working so hard today—I respect you for what you do for our family,” something powerful happens. Her words strengthen him in ways few others can.
It’s one thing for coworkers or friends to respect a man’s work, but for his wife to do so means everything.
“Her husband is known in the gates, when he sits among the elders of the land.”
— Proverbs 31:23
The virtuous woman’s husband was respected because she supported and honored him. Her encouragement echoed into his reputation.
The Beauty of Domestic Support
The home is not merely a physical space—it is the center of ministry and love.
When a husband works hard to provide, he needs to know his wife is faithfully “holding up the fort.”
And when he comes home, he should also be willing to serve and share the load.
Marriage is not a competition of exhaustion; it’s a partnership of grace.
The virtuous wife is described as one who “looks well to the ways of her household.”
That doesn’t mean she does everything alone—it means she does all things with diligence, kindness, and order, so that her home becomes a place of peace and strength for everyone in it.
In a world that glorifies independence, Scripture honors interdependence—husband and wife serving together, each supporting the other’s God-given roles.
The Fruit of a God-Fearing Wife
The passage ends with this timeless truth:
“Favor is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.”
— Proverbs 31:30
Physical beauty fades, but the inner radiance of godliness grows brighter with time.
The woman who fears the Lord is not merely attractive—she is admirable. Her children rise and bless her. Her husband praises her. Her work speaks for itself.
Such a woman builds her home, strengthens her marriage, and reflects the wisdom of heaven in everyday life.
The Point
A wife’s love for her husband is expressed not only in emotion but in words of respect, acts of support, and a life that honors God above all else.
When she fears the Lord, her home becomes a testimony of grace—her husband is known in the gates, her children call her blessed, and her works praise her long after her words are silent.
