What does the story of Mary actually reveal about God?

In this Advent conversation, we sit down with Dr. Amy Peeler—Kenneth T. Wessner Chair of Biblical Studies at Wheaton College and an Episcopal priest—to explore how the incarnation shapes our understanding of women, agency, compassion, and the character of God.

As we reflect on the pregnancy at the center of the Christmas story, we ask:

What does it mean that God chose to enter the world through a woman?

Why does Mary’s consent matter theologically?

How should the Church think about unintended pregnancy and abortion in light of the incarnation?

What does the incarnation teach us about the equal value of men and women?

How can Christians hold compassion for both mother and child without collapsing into political extremes?

This conversation moves beyond slogans and into Scripture. Together, we explore how a right understanding of Mary’s role in salvation history reshapes how we talk about women, power, pregnancy, and unity in the Church.

Dr. Amy Peeler is the Kenneth T. Wessner Chair of Biblical Studies at Wheaton College and a priest in the Episcopal Church. She is the author of Women and the Gender of God, where she explores how Scripture presents God’s identity and women’s place within the story of redemption.
