Drawing from years of engaging online with skeptics, ex-Christians, and the spiritually curious, Whitman outlines three major patterns of resistance: people hurt by the church, people shaped by shifting cultural norms, and those who feel too intimidated by the Bible to engage it deeply.

Whitman speaks compassionately about the pain many experienced in church settings—especially during the 1990s evangelical youth group era—but also emphasizes the impact of digital life, changing social values, and rising distrust in institutions. Yet, he argues, many are beginning to reapproach scripture in a spirit of curiosity, especially as other sources of authority have collapsed.

Rather than dismissing these resistances, Whitman encourages thoughtful re-engagement with the Bible on its own terms, as a text that speaks deeply into human insecurity, injustice, and longing. The conversation is refreshingly honest, sometimes humorous, and deeply pastoral—offering wisdom for anyone disillusioned with faith, but still wondering if the Bible might have more to say.
