I begin my critique of Chapter 17 of Richard Bauckham's book Jesus and the Eyewitnesses. Perhaps the most controversial portion of Jesus and the Eyewitnesses, at least from the standpoint of a Christian, is Bauckham's non-traditional choice for the author of the Gospel of John. Is he right? Maybe. But Bauckham sacrifices a lot in order to make textual sources, like Polycrates, historically reliable. In the end, I consider this chapter to be outside the main scope of this book and more of Bauckham's pet project, since it has nothing really to do with establishing evidence for the eyewitness testimony of the Gospel of John. Be patient and I will explain all. Apologies for the poor audio quality - I am having a few problems with my crappy old laptop..!! UPDATE 14 Aug 2017 - I made a major blunder in this video by accidentally misrepresenting one of Bauckham's key arguments.
