Dr Rowan Williams discusses the practical and conceptual issues that arise from treating empathy as simply understanding another person’s emotions.

In his lecture, he argues empathy can mask the strangeness of other experiences, and replace issues of practical support to matters of intensity of feelings. He considers these challenges with the need for an account of human rights that takes others’ perspectives into account.
