At the time of Christ some Jewish Rabbis taught that annihilation occurred in Gehenna, the place of final punishment. In his paper presented at the 2018 Rethinking Hell Conference biblical scholar Dr. Craig A. Evans argued that Jesus himself also treated Gehenna that way in Mark 9:48.

Rather than lend support to today's common view of Hell as a place of eternal torment, this would instead support Conditional Immortality / Annihilationism. For more on this view, see http://www.rethinkinghell.com
