Contrary to modern assumptions, Dru argues that this principle—known as lex talionis—is not a law in the strict Roman sense but a guiding principle that frames justice and shapes how communities should handle wrongdoing.

They explore how each context uses the phrase differently: Exodus applies it to cases involving slaves and bodily injury, showing surprising concern for the powerless; Deuteronomy applies it to false witnesses in court, where no one is physically harmed; and Leviticus uses it alongside calls for impartial justice. All three passages work together to restrain revenge, warn the powerful, and elevate due process.

They also highlight how Jesus picks up the thread in the Sermon on the Mount—not to overturn the Torah, but to reveal its true heart: justice rooted in love, mercy, and the image of God in every person. Along the way, they trace the principle back to Genesis 9:6 and even contrast it with Hammurabi’s law code.

This is not about revenge. It’s about restraint, responsibility, and moral clarity in the face of injustice.
