Today to travel across the world you just need a plane ticket and you've arrived in less than two days. 200 years ago, it wasn't so simple, and was much more dangerous. Nevertheless hundreds of thousands of British risked everything to make the journey down the coast of West Africa, around the Cape of Good Hope, and across the Indian and Southern oceans to Australia and New Zealand.
Professor Nigel Biggar explains why the British peoples were motivated to do that, including escaping poverty and famine, as well as personal career ambitions.
