We need to make sense of the key passages in Matt 24 and Mark 13. It is striking that Matt 24–25 includes two sets of Jesus' teaching, in contrast to the single subject in Mark 13. And this is in response to a double question from the disciples in Matt 24.3 'When will this happen—and what will be the sign of your parousia?' The crucial verse we need to make sense of is Matt 24.34: 'Amen I say to you, all these things will happen before this generation passes away.'
