James F. Childress is a University Professor and the John Allen Hollingsworth Professor of Ethics at UVA, where he directs the Institute for Practical Ethics and Public Life. He is also Professor of Religious Studies and has been a Professor in the Batten School and the School of Medicine. In 44 years of teaching at UVA, he has taught over 19,000 students. His many awards include the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Bioethics and Humanities in 2004 and the University of Virginia's highest honor, The Thomas Jefferson Award, in 2002.
