Lecture by Lynn Cohick "We are the Circumcision:" Philippians 3 and the Christian Life. Given 7pm - 9pm on September 12, 2015 at The Lanier Theological Library Chapel in Houston, Texas. It is part of the Lanier Library Lecture Series. A series devoted to bringing world class lectures to benefit the community of all those who might be interested. I am indebted to the generosity of the library to allow me to share these videos of theirs. Please support them by visiting their website for more information and resources: http://www.laniertheologicallibrary.org/ In her lecture, Lynn H. Cohick will explore Paul's desire to know Christ, as expressed in Philippians 3:1-21. In this passage, Paul contrasts redemption in Christ with both his former way of life as a Pharisee and with Roman imperial propaganda. The lecture will discuss how the New Perspective on Paul brings Second Temple Judaism into sharp focus, thereby illuminating Paul's discussion of righteousness and the Law. Paul's claims about resurrection challenge Rome's political ideology. How might Paul's view of Jewish life shape our understanding of Christian faithfulness? Is Paul's critique helpful for our engagement with current uses of political and military power? bio info: Lynn Cohick is a Professor of New Testament at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois. She is interested in how average Jews and Christians lived out their faith in the ancient settings of Hellenism and the Roman Empire, as well as how Jews and Christians today can better appreciate and understand each other. Lynn researches women in the ancient world, especially how they celebrated their religions, and she explores the impact of feminist thought on New Testament studies. She enjoys studying the Apostle Paul and his epistles within their larger Jewish and Greco-Roman milieu. Lynn received a Ph.D. in New Testament and Christian Origins from the University of Pennsylvania in 1996. In 1998, she traveled to Nairobi, Kenya to teach at the Nairobi Graduate School of Theology for three years. In her current position at Wheaton College she teaches various courses on the New Testament, Jewish background, Paul himself and his prison epistles, along with 1 and 2 Corinthians and Gender Studies. Lynn's publications include Philippians in the Story of God Commentary (Zondervan, 2013), Ephesians in New Covenant Commentary (Eugene, OR: Cascade Books, 2010) and Women in the World of the Earliest Christians (Baker Academic, 2009). When she is not teaching or writing she enjoys reading mysteries and jogging with her husband Jim.
