He was the 104th Archbishop of Canterbury from 2002 to 2012 having previously served as Bishop of Monmouth and Archbishop of Wales. As Archbishop of Canterbury, he was viewed by many as a progressive voice and notably attempted to allow the appointment of women as bishops in the Church of England. He has also served as President of Magdalene College, Cambridge.
