The first lecture in the lecture series, "Nicaea 325-2025: Celebrating the 1700th Anniversary of the Council of Nicaea" explores the impact and significance on both the Catholic and Orthodox Churches.
The healing of centuries-old division between the Catholic and Orthodox Churches has been a priority for Pope Francis and his two predecessors. The lecture addresses the sufficient conditions for the Eucharistic communion and the promise that the common Nicene faith in the triune God and the Lordship of Jesus Christ holds for Christian unity.
Prof. Paul Gavrilyuk is the Aquinas Chair in Theology and Philosophy at UST's Theology Department. He is the founding president of the International Orthodox Theological Association (IOTA), which is a part of the department’s Encountering Orthodoxy Initiative. In 2025, IOTA will organize a conference on the Council of Nicaea in Rome (iota-web.org).
Presented by the Theology Department in collaboration with the Philosophy Department, Catholic Studies Department, and the Office of Mission.
