A keynote address by Dr. Lewis Ayres, "Intimations of Divine Life in Nicene Theology," given at Sacred Heart Major Seminary's academic conference, "Nicaea at 1700: The First Council and the 'Way Together'," which took place Oct. 2-4, 2025.
Dr. Ayres is the McDonald Agape Distinguished Chair in Early Christian Theology at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas (Angelicum). From Dr. Ayers:
"How do Nicene theologians speak of the interactions between the three divine persons using language using analogies drawn from human interactions? Many different movements in the twentieth century have tried to speak in this way, but, I will allege, without sufficient attention to what may be discovered in the key fourth-century sources. My goal is to show that such a practice is indeed warranted by Nicene theologians, but in quite precise circumstances that should continue to serve as a guide for modern theological reflection."
