In this excerpt, Thomas Schreiner addresses one of the most difficult and debated themes in Scripture: the hardening of Pharaoh’s heart. Did Pharaoh harden his own heart, or did God harden it?

Schreiner explains that the biblical text affirms both. God is fully sovereign—even over the human heart—yet Pharaoh remains morally responsible for his actions. Scripture does not resolve this tension philosophically, but clearly holds both truths together.

This passage reminds us that God’s sovereignty does not remove human responsibility. Both are real, and both must be held together as Scripture presents them.
