#rowanwilliams #lecture In this video lecture, Rowan Williams explores what it means to create characters in drama. What happens to characters when we try to use them as mouthpieces for our own views, or when they refuse to play the roles we have allotted to them? Using Hamlet, Falstaff and Prospero from Shakespeare's plays as examples, with reflections on works by Iris Murdoch and Bernard Shaw, Dr Williams asks what we can learn about human nature and free will from the process of creating theatre. This Kathleen Hall Memorial lecture, "Rebels and Puppets: what does it mean to create characters in drama?", is the first in a series exploring faith through drama in a wide theological and theatrical context. It was given by Radius' Patron, the Rt Revd Dr Rowan Williams, on 18 September 2021 in St Oswald's Church, Thirsk.
