YouTube description

In this presentation from our FaithTech Chicago meetup, Dr. Daniel Treier overviews of the development of Christian thinking about modern technology, and profiles the leading thinkers representing four key themes: First, Jacques Ellul's treatment of the social ecology of technique highlights the potential problems of power. Second, Wendell Berry's writings highlight the life-giving responsibility of caring for particular places. Third, Albert Borgmann's philosophy highlights that technology goes beyond making and using devices to affect our focal practices. Fourth, neo-Calvinist theology highlights the possibility of technological progress as an aspect of the biblical narrative, moving from creation toward redemption after the fall. Along the way, this overview mentions other contemporary thinkers and suggests that Christian thinking about technology has tended to be individualistic, not focusing enough on the church as revealing God's design for human community.
