In the 39th episode of PatristiCast, Prof. Paul Gravilyuk and Fr. Andrew Hofer join me to discuss the publication of their edited volume, The Oxford Handbook of Deification. Deification has a long tradition in the Christian tradition, particularly in the Church Fathers, who inherited both Hellenistic notions of deification and the biblical tradition, especially Ps. 82 in which God says "You are gods, sons of the Most High (Ps. 82:6). Here we discuss the philosophical and biblical roots of the concept as well has its reception in the 19th and 20th centuries.
