Rosie Dawson is in conversation with Dr Julia Snyder and Dr Daniel Weiss, co-editors of the book "Scripture and Violence", which considers whether violent acts can ever be motivated purely by reading a text. They explore the complex relationship between scripture, religion and violence and argue that a causal link between violent texts and violent actions is over-simplistic and ignores multiple economic, political and other motivations.
The conversation includes Omar Shaukat, who has spoken to ISIS recruits and found their reason for joining was not solely derived from the Koran; Dr Helen Paynter, director of the Centre for the Study of Bible and Violence at Bristol Baptist College, on the role of the preacher in interpreting texts; and Simon Perfect, from Theos, on the role of RE teachers in understanding the context of scripture.
The discussion was held on 1 September 2020
