The Bible does not explicitly define or claim inerrancy, and any belief in it must be inferred from ideas about divine inspiration. Key biblical terms often used to support inspiration, such as “God-breathed,” are vague and not clearly explained within the text itself.
A study of the term “divinely inspired” shows it was used broadly in ancient contexts and does not necessarily imply complete accuracy or perfection. At most, it suggests something originates from God, but going beyond that meaning may exceed what the term originally conveyed.
The conclusion is that strict or literal views of biblical inerrancy, particularly those common in some modern traditions, are based on misunderstandings of what divine inspiration actually means, leading to flawed assumptions about the Bible’s nature.
